The loudest sound is a nearby air conditioning unit with its blades cutting the air in regular and uniform intervals. Something disturbs the tree branches behind me and grasshoppers/ cicadas/ those bugs jump in with their rapid clicking sounds, almost vibrating. General traffic is constant and near. Occasionally the higher pitched squawk of hydraulics and shifting gears of trucks interrupt the steady whoosh and rumble of traffic in the distance. The trees and bushes rustle again with birds, squirrels, or lizards. The hollow, faint 'chonk' of twigs or bits of bark falling and hitting the ground; the scraping and shuffling of lone sandals and jingling of keys. Sudden and short bird chirps; another chorus of bugs far in front of me - they stop the same time a loud popping motorcycle engine goes by. Crunch of leaves under feet.

Larger, noisier rumbles and roars of trucks are going by now. Something sounds like plastic scarping against the pavement. The air conditioner still keeps a steady hum and beat, and a smoother bird call starts up - this time lasting a few minutes. A frantic buzz appears then diminishes as it passes by me. Jingling of keys and shuffling of sandals, whirring and clicking of metal clangs. They cough. Indistinguishable voices go by. The birds increase their intensity...as does the frequency of bikes and footsteps. Car brakes squeal, doors shut, more voices, laughter. The unmistakable roar of buses and trucks begin again amongst the regular traffic.

Eyes Open/Closed

The Soundening
Listening with eyes open:
I hear a loud whirring noise far off like a lawn edger or mower it is very far off to my left. There is the steady humming buzz near me of electricity pulsing through something. The small metallic clinking and clanking of keys in someones pocket and their heavy breathing as they pass by to my right, close by. It echoes off of the concrete and then I hear footsteps going up concrete stairs. Bells ring marking the close of an hour. There are footsteps somewhere off to my left, and elevator beeps, and a very loud sound of some sort of compressor or heavy machinery. Now it is very close, like somewhere nearby they are initiating some sort of reactor. It ceases. I hear from far to the left the sound of some sort of loud animal's low repetitive guttural grunting, sort of a whooping noise, or maybe the sound of a lift the is struggling to hoist something. Peoples voices to the right. My back is to a brick wall and all of the sounds around me bounce off of it and hit me either from the right or left, never from the front or back. I hear some car engines far off accelerating, first one of them put out a high sound, then another perhaps emits a low bass sound. Echoes of peoples voices. A tiny pattering of a dragonfly's wings hitting concrete immediately next to me on the right happens when one somehow lands on its back. Birds chirp now.

Echoes of them getting further and further and now they are gone. A beep, of a two way radio. A car backing up somewhere causes a loud beeping. Someone s echoes bring me the words “architecture,” and “when I get done here” mumble mumble ... A bird chirps. The electrical buzzing noise never ceased, it quietly goes on in the background. A compressor comes on, like for a refrigeration unit. A door slams, and a loud whirring noise last for about four seconds. Sound like boots off to the right. Faint echoes of a bird chirps and peoples voices. A slow repetitive noise far off perhaps is someone descending stairs. Very distant echoes. The jungle, just one, then now again, of keys far to the right. People laughing a little bit. A whooshing noise of cart perhaps, yes a loud cart, very nearby. The wheel squeaks with want of oil. The loud machine noise again. “I know it's sort of beautiful” A Girls voice loudly exclaims to my right. The sound of a metal hitting metal and then a POP. A door whooshes open and then closes, with a small grunt of the opener. Girls voices, high pitched, go from my left and then right. The beeping of a car backing up, actually I should say truck, and the engine of it. An airplane passes overhead. Loudly. Laughing. A soft mechanical whooshing begins, lasting for about 12 seconds and then ceasing. More beats of human contact with concrete. “I'MCOMINGUP!” someone shouts. Beeps of a two way radio, “IMCOMINGUPSTEVE!” I open my eyes and leave here...

What I heard
This exercise was pretty interesting because yo really have to listen carefully to the world and that is not something we normally do. In listening with my eyes open I identified 8 sounds and with my eyes closed I identified 14. Not only did I identify more with my eyes closed, the sounds were much more subtle. I'm sure I missed countless sounds also. Heres a list of what I heard from the table over by FAD.

Eyes open: water on metal, splashing, a girl talking on her cellphone "...Tuesday,", the traffic whooshing by, engines firing when the lights turn green, tires spinning, foot steps, bugs chirping, one lone car passing by, a car with screechy brakes screeching by, bike gears squeaking, a semi-truck and it's carriage bouncing around with big clanking noises, far away braking sounds of big trucks, a trash truck roaring by, out door pipes buzzing, exhaust blasts, motorbike rumbling, loud pumping music from inside a car zooming by, an undetermined bang, Pat Lemieux greeting a friend on a bench (I think the 'friend' is Jack, but I cant tell cause he's looking away0, a dry leaf hitting the cement (only audible because there was no traffic around for a second), traffic is back now, loud schreeching and rumbling and whooshing of engines and tires. Very dry, hard leaves being blown around each other. Footsteps of a man wearing shiny leather shoes. Metal objects clanging and moving around against each other in the back of a pick up truck.

My sound experience
I have not recorded or experimented too much with sound, and therefore have very little experience with it. I've mostly just experimented with sound when setting it to video (a little with Adobe Soundbooth). I'm looking forward to learning more, though!
Audio experience
I would consider myself mildly knowledgeable working with sound. If I had to say what I am best at, I would say cleaning up recorded sounds to increase their quality like removing hissing and noise. I don't have much experience in composing my own sounds or how to record audio for best quality. I'm sure I'll improve in that area. I use Audacity when working on a Mac and Sony Sound Forge when working on a PC. I think both programs have advantages and disadvantages. I am familiar with compressing digital audio to maintain quality and still have a small file. As for analog, I have done recordings and dubbed some tapes to convert to digital but that is about it.
Sound Experience
My sound experience is limited to what I've learned from the Time Based Media and Video Art classes. So, in other words, I know how to capture sound with different kinds of microphones (camcorder mounted, boom mic and personal mic) and adjust sound or enhance sound in Final Cut Pro. I have not had the opportunity to work with Audacity, yet, or work with raw audio files. But I want to!

Audio Experience
I have experience with digital audio in audacity, pure data, ableton live, and MIDI all which I used to cut up and manipulate sound. I got a lot of experience this summer with recording and editing sound, as well as using resources like Freesound.org. Aside from that I played tuba in high school so I have a little music theory under my belt.
my experience with sound...
consists mostly of my trying to sing along with the radio. but pat's class on sound design helped a lot. So now i know how to use programs like pure data to speed up and slow down clips, change pitch, blah blah. I know a lot about drum machines. And Ableton live is my friend. it uses a lot of filters. I also am over the hump on MIDI(before i knew what it was it was so confusing because no one could explain it, pat helped with that too). I know how to use Audacity and a little bit of GarageBand and Cecilia and Plugins that are more like little games. I know how to record sound with my laptop and a video camera(separating audio and video in imovie). Freesound is a good source online and also great for geotagged clips.
And I helped my boyfriend make his optical theremin.(which didn't really work the first time.)

Not too much aside from the video work we do in class and the occasional digital camera recording. I have used Audacity to record sound (granted with a less than stellar headset mic) but I would consider myself super rusty with the program~

Audio Experience
I've always had a strong interest in audio, but I've only recently begun experimenting with it. I began playing piano, and clarinet when I was really young, so I really appreciate those types of sounds, I also love percussion. The video we watched today made me realize how pleasing those sounds can be. I listen to music constantly, mainly alternative rock, classical, experimental, and techno type things. I adore Radiohead mainly because of the variety in their sound. They tend to use a wide variety of interesting instruments, and make fantastic compositions.
I have recently experimented in recording audio for an animated cartoon I'm working on. I recorded various sounds that seemed fitting as background noise, sound effects and so on. It was the first time I have recorded audio for the purpose of obtaining pure sound rather than recording voices. I used audacity to edit the sound for the cartoon. Also, in previous classes I've recorded audio to use as a voice over for a video. I worked with altering my voice, removing background noise and so on.

My Experience With Audio
I've recorded audio for the accompaniment of video. That's all. I mostly did it in Sony Soundforge, not Audacity, but the purpose was the same. I was just trying to make it sound clean though (get rid of background noise and pops, etc.) rather than alter it in any major way for my artistic purposes.
