Food Project, Reflection

I found this project to be significantly more difficult than was expected. Once I started trying to come up with emotional-food-stereotypes it became obvious that they were either fewer or more obscure than I thought. I did end up with enough to fill a menu, but my intention had been to fill two sides, and some of the items reach a bit more than I thought I would have to. Overall though, I think they're pretty relatable items.
One of the things I did to find or confirm stereotypes was to poll the internet (especially facebook), but I found that most of the people who replied had a hard time understanding what I was asking them for.
I tried to make the "restaurant" match the theme of the food by using a profile to imply psychology/emotion, and didn't realize until crit that by using a female I had singled out one gender. In hindsight, I could have tried something related to a heart, but I'm not sure how I would avoid making it either too flowery or two gory in that scenario.
I do think I could have done more with the project with more time, but I'm not displeased with it. The lamination really gives it the impression of a real menu.
I agree though with the comment I got at crit, about how I should have had enough for everyone and taken orders. It hadn't even occurred to me that I wouldn't have had to laminate each copy.

Perfume: Story of a Murderer

I've actually seen this movie before and personally really enjoy it. It's about a man who's born with an extraordinary sense of smell, so powerful that it overwhelms every other inkling of humanity he might have. I think more than anything, the directing is really what makes the movie. It does an exceptional job of conveying olfactory senses, given that the audience can't actually experience them. Some of it is a bit exaggerated, for instance when he "smells" and apple being thrown at his head from behind and dodges it easily. There are also quite a few instances that imply that Grenouille can smell significantly better than a dog (Things like glass, and over vast distances), without having to put his nose to the ground (where smells settle) or having any visible deformities that increase the length of his nasal passages, allowing for a greater number of smell receptors.
Anyway, knit picking aside, I love the way that smell is portrayed to be such a strong, even overwhelming, sense. It really is entirely unlike our other senses; most of the time it's as though it doesn't even exists, and so when we inhale a smell that's powerful enough to cross the threshold of our ability to sense, it can really jar us away from everything else we had in mind. Whether it's enough to entirely overwhelm the mind and produce strong emotions that no other stimulus can do (save drugs), I'm not so sure.

Reflection: Chocolate Friend

Well I was really burned out on this project and unable to carry out my original ambitious idea to fruition.  That is not in any way a surprise.

The result wasn't too horrible though. I learned a bit on the technical side concerning physics engines, and how much I really do suck at writing code. I got sick of chocolate after looking at tons of references images for the models. I got to do a bit of writing (i hid eating/food phrases in each of the text sequences, such as "chew me up and spit me out" or "swallow" my worries, etc) and reflect on my own anxieties.

Was it too literal? Probably. Did it turn into a game of "knock everything off the table?" Yes... but I wanted to make more interactive games, and that's what I got, at the expense of some content. So... I only got TWO portfolio worthy projects out of this class, not three.

No complaints. No regrets. TO GRADUATION.

I modeled this entire cake, but it looked stupid from above. So I ended up not using it. But here it is, a bit unfinished. The cursed, wasted cake. 

Also I was late to a crit for the first time in my life. Horrible. Cannot be forgiven or undone, but I'm not losing any more sleep over it (ba dump ching)

Even though some of the things I wanted to communicate didn't come across as clearly as I would've liked, I'm satisfied with the way it came out. There were recommendations to use different hands and stylize the photos a bit to make them look like different people and generations as well as figuring out whether I want them photo album sized or even larger than their current 11X17 state.

I do like the structure of the photos and it might be something I explore in the future.

So we used the peels of the fruits and vegetables from Publix and created clothing. We were thinking of skin with consumer goods which juxtaposed with leather and animal materials to make clothes. Next to the skin created shirt, we displayed the fruits and veggies that were peeled in order to make the clothes. We wanted to show the waste in order to create the clothes. 

Thinking of critique, some people had really good ideas of furthering this idea. With the idea of people using every part of the animal in certain cultures, we could have used every single part of the waste to create other goods.

EAT YOUR WORDS

For this project, I used edible paper and ink to write down some of the most offensive tweets and quotes of celebrities today.
Some, while not offensive to everyone in general, were still received with aggressive/negative responses by the FANDOM of whomever that actor/singer was offending.
In any case, it's all a matter of public response.

To find these, I looked for people's rankings of the most offensive tweets online, and found quite a few.

With social media, the tendency to thoughtlessly post our opinions about our own personal lives, or any recent event that might've taken place has gotten more than one celebrity in trouble. Not that the rest of the population don't make their share of offensive, stupid, or just plain offensively stupid comments out there, but celebrities, by nature of being on the spotlight, get much more immediate—oftentimes aggressively irate—feedback from the people that follow them on, say, Twitter,

This purpose of this project was to write these words down on a medium that is literally consumable, but also to imply that these are instances in which these celebrities probably wish (or should wish) they could have eaten their words. Not only that, it's also a commentary about how we as their audience and sometimes-followers, whether offended or not by their words, eat them up all the same, in our own way.

Essentially, however offensive the word vomit that these stars might type out, it is the fans and followers that gobble it up and make it go viral, as they say.

Fame, as always, is a two way street.

And, whereas out generation is perhaps all too accustomed to informing the world at large of our daily thoughts and experiences—we might also benefit from some careful consideration before actually posting the first thing that comes to mind onto a public server.

Unlike the words on this wafer paper, the ones you post on the internet are impossible to take back.

Plus: The paper and ink also proved to be a rather easy and fun way to make temporary tongue tattoos
