Learn GoogleEarth

When doing beginner and Advanced tutorials.
Ive been having the hardest problem doing screen shots on my computer. But I will explain what I did in the tutorials as much as I can in this blog post

Beginner Tutorial
Street View ( I liked the street view. Especially the 3d toggle man view. I liked being able to see buildings in Boulder Colorado in a 3d atmosphere. It makes you feel as though you are there on the streets.
3D Trees they had us go the the Amazon Forest in Brazil to see the 3D Trees and let me tell you they look absolutely amazing. So much detail was put into these different species of trees. I think you would love this part of google earth because of your fascination with trees in some of your work.
Historical Imagery We went to LosVegas to see the Historical Imagery. its really interesting to see the landscape in different time periods. like comparing and contrasting the landscape of LosVegas from the 50s to now and to see the changes in buildings and different points during the different time periods.
Navigation its real easy to navigate. All I have to do is type in my location into the search tab. I can zoom in and out. there are many ways to do this. By double clicking or clicking on different points. I really enjoy the 3d buildings and street view. And you even get to match the time of day by moving the sun around. This is some really cool technology that we have to use today.
Searching for Places All I have to do is enter a name into the search tab. I can do this by country, state, city, zip code, or city. I could also find specific landmarks like the golden gate bridge. Its very easy to navigate this technology. You can search by business, find directions, and just look for a specific address.
Drawing and Measuring You can add paths and measure those points in google earth.  You can do this by length and depth on the elevation of the path for your location. you can also use the ruler tool. They give you many ways to get a measurement of the areas in the maps tat show up in google earth.
Place marks and Tours You can add place marks by adding a new place mark. this allows you to make custom tours for people to see. There are already many tours already uploaded to the tours on google earth. So that you can see tours that google earth think are interesting and that people would want to make. You can also send and save your files for google earth.
Exploring Mars, Moon, And Sky we get to look at the solar system. This is so cool. Its so interesting to look at these constellations, the moon in 3d and mars. I don't think people back in history would believe that we have the technology to actually see real life renders of what stuff outside of earth and even how things on earth look in such a vivid and real sense.
Moon in Google Earth easy to explore the moon. You can see historical charts and maps from the apollo missions, the apollo moon missions and artifacts on the moon. We get a guided tour and hear and see different parts of the moon. I think this hands on approach to exploring the moon is great esspecially to those who are interested in luner things and who loves space and learning about it first hand.
Searching Google Earth Screenshots Its cool that you can see people in the actual places in google earth. and see real pictures of people in those areas or real pictures to compare and contrast to the digital version of those places.
Tour Guide I really enjoyed the tour I did of the colosseum in Rome. It was very appealing visually and it was very informative.

Advanced Tutorials
Recording a Tour I think its cool that you can go in and recording your own tour. I went into google earth to try and do this myself and do a recorded tour of UF. When I go to press the record camera icon button on the top of the screen, the red recording area does not appear on the bottom left. so I cannot seem to get this to work.
Importing KML, KMZ and GPS Data So I think that this is the most helpful thing that you can use Google earth for as far as doing projects. It lets you see stuff that you have done or have gone through your GPS input. I also enjoy seeing all of the plug ins that google earth lets you see. all of the data from where ever on earth. Like the distance between tectonic plates or the elevation in earth at any given point.
Geotagging Photos I like being able to select photos from say my vacation and then be able to mark my location on the photo. So the geotagging is cool because you can go on the map and you will be able to see this.

Taste Experiments | Madeline Morales

Are you a supertaster? Oui.

Texture and Flavor
The pureed carrots tasted absolutely miserable, and the carrot juice was somehow worse. Although I'm not generally a fan of carrots, the pureed aggravated my distate because I cannot stomach mushy foods. The bigger the carrot pieces, the less the concentrated flavor and the more tolerable the carrots became.

Umami and Mouthfeel
The MSG makes the water taste heavier, richer, and it makes the water completely coat the mouth with the abhorrent flavor.

Balancing Fat and Acid
One oil/two vinegar: This tasted the best. There was a somewhat slick feel to the mixture but the acidity balanced it.
two oil/one vinegar: This basically tasted like straight oil.
equal parts oil and vinegar: The oil overpowers a lot, so even though the parts are equal, the vinegar is masked.

Salty and Sour
Mostly salt, drop of lemon: Too salty, though the lemon makes it less severe.
Mostly lemon, pinch of salt: This tastes the best, the lemon flavor isn't overpowering and the salt has a strong flavor without overpowering anything.
Just lemon: Tastes how you'd expect, lemony.
Just salt: Tastes how you'd expect, salty. This is how I usually eat it.

Bitter and Salty
I don't usually like grapefruit because it's a little too bitter for my taste, but the salt cancelled out the bitterness and just made the grapefruit taste tart and sour and sweet. I ended up eating several slices.

Bittersweet
90 - Too bitter, almost inedible. With dulce, somewhat more tolerable but still not good.
86 - Still on the 'too bitter' side, thought with the introduction of dulce it's edible but not preferable.
72 - Somewhat too bitter. With dulce, tolerable.
51 - Good, getting rather sweet with dulce
31 - too sweet, intolerable with dulce.

3/30 - Project 2 Process Post #3 - Jen Herrera

I'm currently in the process of planning my recipes to test-cook this weekend.
I'm choosing 3-5 junk foods to attempt a couple recipes recipes each with, to try and find the perfect iteration for what I'm after.
Ideally I will be able to choose a recipe for each that:
1. Accurately mimics the food visually
2. Tastes good (not necessarily like the food, but not unpleasant).

The priority is the look since I'm thinking about expectations.

After Crit, I started considering the presentation more, and I've decided that I do want to set up a sampling table. I don't think I have the time or means to fabricate a booth, nor do I think it's particularly necessary; I think a good sized table with a table cloth will mimic the setup at a smaller non-chain grocery store. In fact, now that I write it, it's kinda the sort of store that would sell my imaginary product. To present the food I want one set of the packaged food, a set laid out that are still intact (and could be cut up as time goes on), and then some cut-up versions to give away.

I'll post again as I get ideas for the recipes!

ANNIE KLOPP | In Progress Work

If you read my most recent post, you may be a little confused at the images here as I am slightly turning down a certain direction.  My last piece was about social media creating a platform for uniting different neighborhoods and opening windows into different bubbles and parts of the same city, otherwise never noticed by certain parts.

I want to continue down this thought with a critique on social media.  If there is enough space in the senior show, instead of my video project, these pieces could be interesting when seen together.

Social media is great.  But it can also be a crutch, bad for us, and even an addiction.  I often find myself mindlessly opening up a tab and autopilot kicks in as I browse Facebook.  I don't leave Facebook satisfied. I usually just do it for the pleasure of an instant gratification.  Ironically, it leaves me less fulfilled.

With our segment of the semester on junk food I found it the perfect metaphor for my relationship with social media. I could easily eat a plate full of spinach, eggs, and ham and feel satisfied and better four hours later.  This relationship often describes my relationship with school.  Some classes and circicula more than others. If I could just find a way to sit down and work on school work more and mindlessly browse social media less.  If I could just find a way to eat more fiber and protein and less junk food.

We are what we eat.  Aren't we?  Is our new fascination with social media a reflection of the same world with a Starbucks and McDonald's on every corner?

This may be an artwork turning into a bit of a one-liner but I think it's a worthwhile metaphor that hopefully sticks.
First, I built the 2 ft x 2 ft frames with thin wood that I cut into a frame to mount onto the front of the Masonite boards to create a "border" for the mosaics so that the candy would fit neatly into the wood structure.
I then spray painted them a general solid color to give the unified look of the app they were supposed to appear as.  This will give myself a solid and United foundation to build upon so that the candy is more easily read in context.
As I started creating my first mosaic with candy I found it very important to use the wrappers.  The branding on candy is part of what entices us, so the same rule should follow somewhat with social media.

The more and more candy I placed onto the frame, each carefully applied with polyacrylic to preserve and solidify the flimsy wrappers, I am embarrassed to admit, THE MORE I ATE THE CANDY.

My resolution this year was to stop eating sugar almost entirely.  TMI, but I don't know if anyone's noticed, I've lost about 10 pounds.  So for someone who can so strictly adhere to a new diet, particularly one relating to sugar, I was astonished at myself.

What was wrong with myself?? Not exactly a ground breaking idea here, but I believe it may have to just do with the fact that I was SURROUNDED by it.  Hundreds of pieces of all kinds of candy.

Is this us, with social media?  I do actually think so. The more of it we see around us, the closer it is to our fingertips, the more power it has over us.

This made me think of a new addition to the piece.  I want my viewers to feel this same cognitive dissonance.  The immediate regret and embarrassment I felt in this moment.  But how?

My final addition to the piece once the mosaics are completed will be a basket of free candy with a sign that reads, "like, follow, and enjoy"

I want my viewers to not immediately notice, but as they consume the candy, they feel the urge to grab more.  After all it will be free, and the sign says "enjoy." But it is my hope that the viewers will slowly have the same reaction I felt, one of shyness, guilt, shame and confusion, over a few pieces of candy.

3/7 - PDF Packet Responses

The Dog Beneath the Skin
The loss that Oliver Sacks must have felt after losing his  dog-like sense of smell is unimaginable. It must have been so jarring to suddenly experience so much and then to have that taken away just as suddenly. I think the idea that our senses can be heightened for short periods of time is really intriguing -- if only there was a way to heighten smell by consuming a harmless candy like with taste.

Nostalgia, the Odors of Childhood and Society
I can remember very specific odors from my childhood, both pleasant and unpleasant. It's interesting that baked goods are a commonality and that other common comforting smells vary by region. I think environment really affects what makes an odor nostalgia. For example, my childhood is filled with comforting smells of spices that wouldn't be as comforting to the generic American family.

I Know What I Like
I think the idea of pleasant and unpleasant reactions to odors being built upon preference is pretty compelling. Personally, I feel like I have experienced that. I do not consume pork and other foods for religious reasons and despite never having intentionally consumed any, I am repulsed by the thought of doing so. The smell of pepperoni sickens me and I hate when people suggest just "taking off the pepperoni" because the pizza is already soiled to me. I think power of preference and persuasion is strong. I'm sure there is some chemical response that makes certain reactions to some smells particularly strong but I do think that preference is a huge part of how we feel.

Another Memory
I like how this Proust piece beautifully illustrates how vividly a smell can mark a memory. A strong smell, good or bad, is often what I remember best about certain situations. It is unsurprising that the character in this reading was so moved by the perfume and remembers it so strongly.

Self-Portrait in Scent
This very short piece reminds me of that scene in season 1 of Breaking Bad (and I'm sure many other forms of pop culture) where Walter White breaks down the chemical components of a human. I didn't consider before this project that scents and tastes are also chemical compounds. It is interesting seeing this chemical make up specifically about smell and then having that associated with a particular human.

Fragrance: the Odor of Sanctity
It is interesting to me that an odor can have religious connotations and can represent something intangible and yet revered. This reading makes me question what "sanctity" truly is and what form it can manifest in.

Environmental Fragrancing
What I found intriguing about this article was how scent could be used to subliminally advertise products. I remember we talked about it once in class - Publix and the fried chicken smell. It's weird to consider how smells can influence our judgement so majorly but I know it is effective. I think about clothing stores such as Hollister that emits such a strong cologne smell that that smell becomes a recognizable characteristic of that company. It brands the company and gives it a "cool" label. The perfume makes for a desirable product for many teens because they associate what they are smelling to some higher level of sophistication.

Scents & Sensibilities
In this article, I like that Yasmil Raymond refers to olfactory senses as a language "and a very subjective language at that." The things we smell truly are a language; they describe the physical and even emotional aspects of our lives. And after all of these readings I do see how subjective this language really is. Smell is something so subjective and flighty that we can barely capture it but when we do, it impacts us enormously.
