Seahorse Key Cell Reception Mapping 1

Today in class, we got a good amount of data extraction done. We were able to extract all the GPS data from the Garmin device and condense it all into a well-organized Excel spreadsheet. The sheet shows my cell service from AT&T compared to Miriam's service on T-Mobile. Variables included in the sheet include name of place, signal strength, data speed, coordinates, and elevation. We also got a date set for meeting with Joe. We will be meeting with him next Tuesday, February 4th.

Seahorse Key Trip - Reflections

So after a few hours of adventuring and exploring the island, we got the idea to interpret the lines that are left on the sand by the water all around the island and see what these"waveforms" sound like when imported into audio software and played back.

We tool a fair amount of photos, video, and some sound clips while we were on the island so we have a decent collection of source material to go off of and work from.

So once we go through all of our material and decide which ones have the most interesting results, we'll put together a sort of orchestra.

Pretty excited.

When taking these photographs I was interested in the abstraction of the elements. Much of the photographs are an aerial view. I was thinking of how to relate each picture to one another while taking the photographs which is why much of these photographs include boundaries and linear qualities as a way to link one texture to the next whether through composition or similar textures. When looking at these images there is a common color scheme that ties the pictures together.

- Creating an abstraction of the island

- build up the island textures and skin

Project 1 update

So far, what I think my project is going to end up being is a blend between the new and old seahorse key. I want to shift between the experience (and the mapping/illustration aesthetic) of the Spanish fleets and the pirates that came to the island so long ago, and the way things look now.

Mostly, it will likely be a mix of video—stop motion for the old scenes (which I will draw over with my tablet to get a modicum of the real scene, but will still alter to fit the 'inaccuracy' of documentation back then)—, and photography/illustration. Just a tour around the island, and the surrounding area, perhaps overlaid with scribbles in Spanish and with a voice over in the same language (perhaps I can convince my dad to let me record his voice).

Map Library Questions || 15. Jan

1.  I looked up the Sanborn Insurance map for St. Pete, which is still quite a distance away from where I grew up in Daytona. But a place near the beach I tried to relate to that by how often changes were made, I'm guessing due to more rusting from being next to the beach more, or from damage of water and hurricanes. I saw the layerings done over existing maps, and the routes created to go around the new makeshift.

3.  1854, 1884 Cedar Key different maps

     Even though these 2 maps are 30 years only in difference, they formally present themselves different.  The map for 1854 is more focused on terrain, in aerial straight down view.  This map is used to see the depths of the lake where its represented numbers everywhere. The 1884 map is more aesthetically, representing an image of Cedar Key, and human life/interactions/boats etc. It is portrayed in more 3d view. 

5.  Its interesting to see mounds and crowns and a group of trees to represent tribes, something royal and forests. This seems to be routes for commercial/merchant type. The unknown is represented as blank or sea monsters. The accurate part is the animals and people it represented and showed.

Progress on Project || 29. Jan

I learned how to take the gps markings and track off the GPS and onto the Google Earth, importing all the points I've made. I also have imported all the photographs off my camera onto my harddrive. I will begin looking through all the photographs and selecting which are blurry and deleting them, leaving only the ones I need with the gps mark points. I will also try to begin organizing each gps with the specific photograph.

Seahorse Key Weekend || 24-26 Jan.

Experiencing seahorse key was definitely a different feel than before when planning the art project. I absolutely enjoyed it and got caught up more in analyzing and investigating sometimes than my project, but still up kept with photographing different areas and gps tracking them. I was surprised in how much space I covered when I walked/jogged to different regions on the beach, since I expected myself to not cover anything but the gps showed me that I covered a good bit of ground. I used canoeing and kayaking to gps track and photograph around the island. I noticed that a lot of the scenery seemed quite similar, not such dramatic changes in color but this still could give each region a simplified and very slightly different color than the next region. It will be the subtle differences of each region between each other. I did begin to photograph not just overall landscape of that point, but sometimes I would find an interesting color or purple rare flower in that certain section I stopped, so I would photograph more closely to that detail, making my focus or "stereotyping" of that section more on what I found interesting than the overall landscape.
