Old GPS Exercise

Here are pics from the Sea Horse Key GPS excercise. Kept forgetting wahhhh!!!
We made a map and path markers linked the the cemetary!

We followed another groups path markers down the beach! Thanks to their map's great markers we received interesting messages in the sand and came across a lovely couple.

Finding a route to our homes!!

The final drawing!!! We meant to step in the form of a tri-force and made several attempts in the light house's back yard. This is what we came up with for some reason.

At least it's an interesting polygon form.

Project 2: Final Critique

Higher Quality Upload of Cravings CafĂ© (Updated Link):
https://vimeo.com/126762942

I worked in After Effects to create an animation featuring several customers with different cravings. All of the cravings refer to tastes and textures that I had to let go of linked to non-plant-based foods. Finally I feature reactions that I often get upon simply choosing or ordering my dishes, when surrounded by others. This is a representation of a general setting and experience I am familiar with.

Before and post critique, I was very much disappointed with the result of my project. Still I am positive towards the future. I would actually love to create first an animation then a video game inspired by the health benefits and experiences of a plant-based diet. I was pretty ambitious towards the project, and didn't reach my goal. But I did learn a lot.

Things to consider post critique:

Fresh from Florida...Super Foods
How kids think about food
What creates food desires
What invites curiosity
Cute fast foods
Game boy aesthetic
Trim customers despite meals
Watch Fed Up
How does this make kids want to eat veggies?
Consider school cafeteria format--imagery is linked to that rather than cafe

Project 2 Process 6: Compilation

Early project ideas revolved around planters and  guerrilla promotion of veggies. Here is a list of links that I have accumulated in my bookmarks.
Knibb: Gathering Moss
How The City Became a Planter
Article on Phytology

Here a few links that went towards a more crafty guerrilla inspiration I had.

Art from Dried Plants
Potential Veggie Decals...
Artist who's MAstered Cutting/Carving Leaves
But why would I cut beautiful veggies...

Direction of Veggie Promotion Sesame Street Style...
Results are disturbing and not effective enough...

If I were a child viewing these vids...I would be intimidated..

This was a somewhat scary find...

Pretty Creative Vid. Had the hype I would have needed for my project... But such heeeavy animation work. I was left inspired. But sought to bite off more than I could chew.

I watched this film on netflix. I admired how they explored several fruit, their origins, the care taken to produce and search for them, techniques for creating hybrids, and the communities and cultures that sprout from them. I personally have a strong connection with mangoes, given that my Mother is Haitian and I've got islander needs in myself. My family is raising four different species of mangoes, two of which are grand (middle aged/ adult) and two of which are dwarfs (also teen and young adult). It has been amazing watching them grow since I was 8 years old. This movie made me reflect on how I do consider these trees a part of my life's vast story when it comes memories of home. It's interesting to consider how people in general connect with fruit. Others might only experience mangoes commercially...I can't look at veggies and fruit the same way at the grocery store anymore. Too cookie cutter (I wonder if there's a veg/fruit version of that expression). I get the privilege of distinguishing between every tree's flavor and making vast varieties of salads and desserts. I wonder how our trees feel about me...

Final Project Format Involved the Animation of a Game

During mid process critique, I felt the urge to leave my prior project idea and go for something more impactful. Something that would represent the energy and release I get from having a healthy lifestyle led by vegetables. I wanted something with the surreal impact of Starburst or quirky Japanese commercials. A couple of veggie commercials that truly inspired me follow:

Hatsune Miku's Po Pi Po.... Not sure this is a legitamte commercial. But it makes me excited and wanting for a veggie drink. And I don't looooove veggie drinks.

This video is absolutely adorable. I figured it had a little bit of spunk that I might incorporate. Next time I should stick to my gut and dance for veggies!!!

Here are the two games that inspired the format of my project.

I liked the idea of wrapping up unhealthy eating habits and symptoms that would lead to chronic disease...Resulting in the foods that are directly linked.
Sushi Go Round

I originally did want to work with the idea of a dining area and being crowded by cancerous food choices...To finally decide upon veggie dishes that would make all other food choices disappear. Diner Dash would be the format...
Penguin Diner

Process Final Project

The Company One+- examines the culture of fitness and the culture of diet. There is a assumption, that within fitness, the people who participate actively represent the brands and identities that their individualized diet or fitness choice represents.  For me it was important that I discussed the power that companies have as a venue for a healthy and happy life, and how these companies become a ritualized unit which brainwashes the public into believing that their way to health and fitness is the best way.

When I was trying to figure out how this project would take physical form I was really interested in the party culture that is associated with fitness.  When people go clubbing or dancing it is a display of their physical self. They are showing the world there physical assets and in a way this is a representation of the individuals health and maintenance of health.  This was why the music choice in the promotional video was very intentional as it was a clubbing like song and the difference between fitness songs and clubbing songs are almost incomparable.  The test tubes are a concoctions of beautiful colors in a single "shot"is all you need for vitality. One thing that was interesting as the crit was in process was the when everyone stood together and took there shot this really represented this idea of ritual and this clubbing mentality.

Easy to go, trendy and cute. Perfect fit just like your mascara or your tampon.

^ The Idealized fitness women

For the performance aspect of the project I felt that it was very important to resemble these idealized fitness women.  In way I feel that this is important because as a women within the fitness world we are easily objectified even more so then then just walking down the street. This questions our intentions for fitness. The male wants to be strong and the women wants to be sexy, what does this mean about the people who participate in diets or other life style choices, what are the intentions and why as a society are we so driven to become the poster image of our race.
^ The Care free, all we want to be
the image of the brand clean and crisp
 Another idealized fitness women

The Promotional Video that was played during the performance

Below are the final product of the performance.  I am after the fact very impressed with how professional and clean this project looked. I do wish in a after thought that I had crafted a more intense work out, and prepared myself for the performance pressure I would feel however it was a really great first hand learning experience.

Project 2 Process 5: Biogas Lab Images

Quite a few pictures from the Biogas Lab. I learned a lot about a diversity of sources for biogas, of which I don't hear about enough. I respect algae so much more now. It was interesting to view the studies on the impact that different levels and colors (spectrum) of light might impact algae growth. Dr. Wilkie was a lot of fun. I was inspired to incorporate the idea of composting into my project. How waste can contribute to the growing of something lovely and edible. Still, I guess that will be for another future project. The lab gave me a celestial vibe when it came to studying the algae growth from a macro/micro level.

Project 2 Process 4 : Field Trips to Campus Bat House Garden

Class trip to the bat house! Grabbed a lot of lovely pictures for use as textures! I was hoping to create a video collage from the textures I gathered from both gardens. Look at us being cool!!! (had a pic w/myself included, but it was an awkward selfie)

Also here is the link to the dropbox (also includes biogas): veg Garden

Google Earth Tutorials and Playing with GIS

Here is a link to all of my Google Earth tutorials. These tutorials from waaaay back that I never uploaded (note the time stamps).  It's quite an easy to use software, and has quite a bit of potential. I am also a little surprised that the format of the software seems just as it did a few years ago. That got me nostalgic. Never realized that it had sooo many tools though. I especially like the "time travel" option. \ ( ^ 0 ^ ) /
